DESCRIPTION:By the van Est isomorphism\, continuous cohomology of simple L
ie groups vanishes in degree greater than the dimension of the associated
symmetric space. In his ICM address 2006\, Monod conjectured that a simil
ar vanishing theorem should hold for continuous bounded cohomology. In th
is talk we will present an approach to this conjecture in the case of SL_2
(R)\, applying methods from harmonic analysis and partial differential equ
ations. This is joint work with T. Hartnick.
