DESCRIPTION:The options available to the equine veterinary surgeon for adv
ance imaging are now many and varied. Traditional modalities\, such as ra
diography and ultrasonography\, still remain the work horses of equine pra
ctice\, however more advanced technologies such as computed tomography and
magnetic resonance imaging have filtered down to equine practice over the
last decade and are allowing us to push the boundaries of our diagnostic
capabilities even further. The availability of imaging facilities and the
expectations of our clients is perhaps exceeding the growth in our knowled
ge of what all this extra information means to the individual animal\, and
there is a valid and interesting question here as to what we are calling
'progress'. We are duty bound to our clients and their insurers to contin
ue to use established and emerging technologies wisely\, refer promptly wh
ere necessary and employ only those modalities most likely to yield releva
nt information. The challenge now will be in deciding where in the proces
s of investigation we decide to use these techniques\, and how we select
cases most appropriately for the each modality.
