DESCRIPTION:Regions of competing order often lie near a multicritical poin
t with enhanced symmetry. This is particular interesting in two dimension
s when an O(2) order parameter which supports vortices and a finite-temper
ature Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition may be enhanced to a high
er symmetry with no finite temperature phase transition. We present a the
oretical description of this phenomenon by reconciling the perturbative sp
in-waves with the non-perturbative vortex excitations. We also give a pot
ential realization of such behavior in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar cold
bosons with competing density wave\, superfluid\, and supersolid phases.
