DESCRIPTION:The successful development of atomic energy in the UK after 19
45 soon left Britain in a pioneering position globally\, with a scientific
base that rivalled\, and in some instances surpassed\, contemporary capab
ilities even in the United States. This paper will assess how this prestig
ious achievement was handled by the British government and scientists alik
e with regard to building relationships abroad\, notably in Europe and the
Commonwealth\, and what this can tell us about British national identity
 in a scientific sense.
