DESCRIPTION:_Talk will be followed by drinks reception in the Alison Richa
rd Building._\n\nThe Centre of Governance and Human Rights (CGHR) has laun
ched a practitioner seminar series\, partnering with expert speakers from
key organisations to delve into the gritty realities of what working in fi
eld like human rights and international development really involves. This
speaker will provide a unique viewpoint\, especially for students of the s
ocial sciences\, by challening them to think about humanitarian assistance
from an engineer's perspective\, as well as provide insights for putting
ideals into practice.\n\n*Gino Henry* Gino Henry is a Chartered Engineer w
ith an MSc in Irrigation Engineering. He is now an independent consultant
based in Cambridge\, principally involved in water supply and sanitation.
   \n\nHe has worked in Albania\, Belize\, Colombia\, Ecuador\, Indonesia\,
  Kenya\, Kosovo\, Liberia\, Malawi\, Macedonia\, Mozambique\, Nigeria\, Pe
ru\, St Helena Island (South Atlantic)\, Syria & Venezuela\, mostly on dis
aster relief assignments for a range of NGOs. \n\nGino is a member of Red
R (Registered Engineers for Disaster relief). He is also now involved in
the training of young engineers and contributes to the ‘Community Water
Supply and Sanitation’ MSc at Cranfield University and the ‘Master of
Disaster Management’ programme at the University of Copenhagen as well a
s helping to run courses for EWB (Engineers without Borders) Cambridge and
others. \n\nTo help us with organisation\, please register your intere
st by emailing: aal33@cam.ac.uk.\n\n*Doing Good in Tough Places* - CGHR Ex
pert Practitioner Series\n\nThe sphere of work known variously as the ‘T
hird Sector’\, ‘Development and Humanitarian Aid’ or simply – doin
g good in tough places – is notoriously impenetrable\, and frustratingly
difficult to navigate for the uninitiated. For somebody hoping to pursue
a career within this field\, the range of agencies and institutions\, init
iatives and centres is at the very least bewildering. Most areas intersect
\, and organisations work with an array of crosscutting issues and context
 s. Yet what at first glance can appear to be a morass of very similar orga
nisations doing generally related things\, is in fact often sharply deline
ated\, with different sectors requiring surprisingly different competencie
s and operating under quite specific mandates. Working as an international
human rights advocate would demand a different skill set and working envi
ronment from a project officer of a first phase emergency response – and
both would have relatively different routes to entry. And a Master’s de
gree isn’t always the best option. Cambridge University educates and tra
ins many of the best young minds in the country and provides a critical in
sight into the issues surrounding international politics\, security\, deve
lopment and humanitarianism. But with little clarity around what is involv
ed in working in this sector\, attempting to translate this theoretical kn
owledge into a meaningful start to a career can be a minefield. With this
in mind\, the CGHR series will allow students to listen and speak to a sel
ection of high-level experts working in these fields\, and address key iss
ues and questions. There will be four one-and-a-half hour seminars through
out Lent 2013\, designed to equip students with an in-depth and critical l
ook at what each area involves\; the type of work carried out\, contingent
challenges and essential competencies. The first hour will introduce the
speaker\, chaired by a discussant from CGHR\, and will open up to the audi
ence in the second hour to provide the opportunity for students to engage
 with the topics discussed.
