DESCRIPTION:John\, 4th Duke of Bedford\, was British ambassador in Paris b
etween September 1762 and June 1763\, and successfully negotiated the Pea
ce of Paris which was signed on 10 February 1763. Thanks to the survival
of the household accounts for the embassy we have a very full picture of
the cost of equipping\, and running an ambassadorial residence at that t
ime - it was in the Duke’s own words ‘ruinous’. This informal paper
will discuss the significance of these records\, and a few aspects of ho
usehold expenditure\, such as servants\, food and wine\, and the equipmen
t for its preparation and consumption.
