DESCRIPTION:In this talk I aim to give a broad overview of some aspects\no
 f locally correlated electron systems\, illustrated where\nappropriate in 
 the context of quantum dot devices. Following\nan extended introduction to
  basic Kondo and related physics\,\nfour selected models will be considere
 d\, with the aim of\nillustrating the diverse range of physics and phases 
 that\ncan arise from the interplay between internal spin and/or\norbital d
 egrees of freedom.
