DESCRIPTION:The Chern number is a mathematical object that can theoretical
ly determine if a fermionic system is topologically ordered or not. For ex
ample\, it can unambiguously determine if a system can support Majorana fe
rmions that can be employed for topological quantum computation. In this t
alk we will reformulate the Chern number in terms of a Berry phase or a wi
nding number. Finally\, we will present a new decomposition of the Chern n
umber in terms of the spin components of the system's fermions that can be
measured\, for example in cold atoms experiments.
