DESCRIPTION:My experience of working within secondary education has shown
me that an\nimpassioned Science teacher sharing her love of reading is an
unexpected\nand inspiring hook for pupils. In this session I will share th
ree key ways\nin which literature can be used to invigorate a Science less
on. Firstly\,\nhow to help pupils find their own distinctive voice. All sc
ientists need to\ncommunicate\; with the public\, funding bodies\, their p
eers. I teach pupils\nhow the mechanics of non-fiction texts perform an id
entical role to the\nbeginning\, middle and end of fiction tales and help
them in writing dynamic\nopenings which demand attention. Secondly how can
storytelling techniques\nbe used to powerful effect by the teacher? Final
ly\, real science is just as\nfantastic and enthralling as Pullman's mulef
a species which coexist with\ntrees or the Capitol's genetically modified
jabberjays in the Hunger Games\ntrilogy. How can examples from children's
fiction be incorporated\nseamlessly within existing schemes of work to spa
rk animated discussions\nand raise achievement levels?\n\nThis session wil
l be valuable to all teachers interested in encouraging\ncreativity within
their classrooms and anyone with a general interest in\nchildren's litera
 ture.\n
