 f a cylinder.  He asked for this to be inscribed on his tombstone.  I will
  show that his pride was justified and that his theorem has had a major im
 pact on the mathematics of recent times\, with surprising connections to s
 uch things as the isoperimetric inequality and the Hodge signature theorem
 .
