DESCRIPTION:In Sebastiano Serlio’s second of seven books on Architecture
\, “On Perspective” published in 1545\, he described three types of th
eatrical scenes: the tragic\, the comic and the satiric. Of these\, the fi
rst two were urban\, comprising public spaces framed by buildings\, and hi
ghly influential in Renaissance theatre set design. The treatise also desc
ribes the characters and deeds that would be expected in each city type an
d as such remains a compelling theory on the nature of urban reality. The
lecture will discuss the continuing relevance of Serlio’s tragic and com
ic scenes to urban design\, as illustrated by contemporary projects includ
