DESCRIPTION:*Community Based Social Marketing and Environmentalism:\nEngag
ement with a new generation of green policies*\n\nSpeaker: Aaron Gillich (
PhD Candidate\, University of Cambridge)\n\nIt is widely acknowledged that
efforts to reduce carbon emissions must consider strategies to improve th
e energy\nefficiency of existing building stock. Studies have consistently
shown that simply providing information and\nfinancing is insufficient to
motivate homeowners to undertake energy efficiency retrofits. An increasi
ng number of\nprogrammes are incorporating community based social marketin
g into their outreach and engagement strategies.\nCommunity based social m
arketing is an approach that identifies and targets specific barriers to t
he uptake of\ngreen technologies and designs calibrated outreach strategie
s to overcome these barriers. These include\ntraditional approaches such a
s print and television advertising\, as well as innovative types of social
marketing that\nmake use of trusted messengers to broaden the programme's
reach.\nThis seminar will discuss several examples of ongoing programs th
at form part of this new generation of retrofit\npolicies. Examples are ch
osen that make use of similar but differing approaches to retrofit financi
ng and end user\nengagement allowing for a comparative analysis among them
. In addition\, it offers a discussion of the role of\ncommunity based soc
ial marketing in end user engagement strategies and policy design.\n\n*The
Living Laboratory: Engaging in research to improve the sustainability of
the Estate*\n\nSpeaker: Claire Hopkins (Living Laboratory for Sustainabili
ty Coordinator\,\nUniversity of Cambridge)\n\nThe Living Laboratory for Su
stainability\, the ‘Living Lab’\, is a new programme coordinated by th
e Environmental\nOffice within Estate Management at the University of Camb
ridge. The Living Lab’s goal is to improve the\nsustainability of the Un
iversity by using the Estate to test and research real world environmental
problems while\nimproving the educational experience of students attendin
g the University.\nGreenBRIDGE is an interdisciplinary group of researcher
s\, with a\ncommon interest in Sustainability in the Built Environment. We
hold a\nvariety of events through the year\, including fortnightly semina
 rs in\nterm time\, special lectures and discussions\, and a large summer e
vent.\nFor more details please see www.greenbridge.org.uk\nThe Living Lab
seeks to engage students from diverse academic backgrounds to create dynam
ic solutions to the\noperational challenges of the University. It also loo
ks to be a platform for academic staff to suggest and steer\nresearch on t
he University Estate\, and to be a tool for Estate Management to improve t
he environmental practices\nof the University.\n\nCommunity based social m
arketing is an approach that identifies and targets specific barriers to t
he uptake of green technologies and designs calibrated outreach strategies
to overcome these barriers. These include traditional approaches such as
print and television advertising\, as well as innovative types of social
marketing that make use of trusted messengers to broaden the programme’s
reach.\n\n\nThis seminar will discuss several examples of ongoing program
s that form part of this new generation of retrofit policies. Examples a

nancing and end user engagement allowing for a comparative analysis among
them. In addition\, it offers a discussion of the role of community based
social marketing in end user engagement strategies and policy design.
