DESCRIPTION:Functions of matrices are widely used in science\, engineering
  and the\nsocial sciences\, due to the succinct and insightful way they al
 low\nproblems to be formulated and solutions to be expressed. New\napplica
 tions involving matrix functions are regularly being found\,\nranging from
  small but difficult problems in medicine to huge\, sparse\nsystems arisin
 g in the solution of partial differential equations.\nI will outline the u
 nderlying theory\, algorithms and available software\,\nfocusing on recent
  developments and pointing out promising avenues for further research.
