DESCRIPTION:I will describe some recent observational highlights\, startin
g with our Solar System\, and continuing with the discovery that many (per
haps most) stars are orbited by planets. I will then discuss what can be i
nferred about cosmic evolution from various probes of the distant and earl
y universe\, and conclude with speculations about whether the observable d
omain that astronomers call 'the universe' could be just a tiny fraction o
f space-time.\n\nLord Rees has recently left the post of the Master of Tri
nity College\, Cambridge. Among numerous honours he received for his work
on astrophysics\, he was the Director of the Institute of Astronomy (Cambr
idge)\, President of the Royal Society and President of the Royal Astronom
ical Society\, and holds the post of Astronomer Royal.\n\nThis is an outre
ach talk\, and therefore FREE FOR EVERYONE!
