DESCRIPTION:This is a dry run of a talk I will be giving at the Internatio
nal Conference on Active Media Technology in Takamatsu\, Japan in May. I
will also highlight some of the areas I intend to continue working on duri
ng the rest of my PhD research. Many of the people in the group will alre
ady have heard some of this material. Feedback on both the talk and the c
ontinued research will be appreciated.\n\nI am looking at techniques for b
uilding intelligent textbooks. These are web-based textbooks that help th
e student work through example problems\, adapt their content to the stude
nt and based on past performance\, and allow the student to work in diagra
m notations that are appropriate to the material. Particularly\, I'm look
ing at how we can build an intelligent textbook for discrete maths. How c
an students work with maths on the web? How can we correct their maths an
d explain why it's wrong? How can we as teachers ask the questions we wan
t to ask\, and how can we help the student answer them?
