DESCRIPTION:Given a chain complex C and a subcomplex C'\, there is a long
exact sequence which can be used to compute H(C )\, the homology of C\, in
  terms of H(C') and H(C/C'). Generalizing\, we can replace C and C' with a
"filtered chain complex"\, and the long exact sequence with a "spectral s
equence"\, which assists in computing the homology of the filtered chain c
omplex. The aim of the talk is to explain what these spectral sequences ar
e\, and to give an idea of their usefulness throughout mathematics.
