DESCRIPTION:Malaria kills nearly one million people each year\, mostly chi
ldren under the age of 5. Amazingly\, the disease is caused by a single ce
ll which is closely related to photosynthetic marine algae. The malaria pa
rasite contains a chloroplast - just like plants and algae- yet has lost t
he ability to carry out photosynthesis. As it is an essential component of
the cell we researching methods to disrupt its function\, in the hope of
 developing new anti-malarial drugs. \n
