DESCRIPTION:Bio\n\nJosé Luis Aróstegui (BMus\, BEd\, PhD Ed) is Professo
r at the Granada University Music Education Department\, Spain. His major
training is in western classical music\, curriculum theory and qualitative
research. He has carried out postdoc research at the University of Illino
is (2001-2003 & 2009) and participated in many research projects\, conveni
ng an EU evaluation major about music teacher education in Europe and Lati
n America (2004-2007).\n \nAbstract\n\nImplications of globalization in mu
sic education from two different perspectives will be discussed in this pr
esentation: From above (neoliberal globalization) and from below (dialogic
al globalization). The first is promoted by transnational companies and im
plies a cultural homogenization. The second is carried out by people from
virtually all over the world interchanging musical ideas both for producti
on and consumption. The result is a musical playing characterized by a cul
tural hybridization bringing out at the same time features of global and l
ocal cultures at the same time. This hybridization will be widely illustra
ted in this presentation throughout musical excerpts from different genres
. In the end I will argue that music education has to acknowledge those sh
ifts and change consequently in order to take into account this broader co
ntemporary social context of music and learning which\, by and large\, aff
 ects youth cultures.\n
