DESCRIPTION:Feedback from star formation is central to cosmological models
of galaxy formation and evolution. Tuning the feedback prescription so th
at simulations reproduce the observed properties of the galaxy population
have provided much insight into which galaxies may lose significant amount
s of metals and gas via galactic winds. The new challenge comes in testin
g these recipes against empirical measurements of outflowing gas. I will p
resent the demographics of galactic outflows\, review the challenges of me
asuring physical properties of the winds\, and compare the results to\nwin
d velocities and mass-loading parameters adopted in cosmological simulatio
ns. We have also detected inflowing gas in these data\, and I will discuss
  its origin.
