DESCRIPTION:There are many physical situations which are heavily influence
d by quantum mechanical effects\, which we just can't deal with analytical
ly. This raises the question: while it might be (relatively) obvious how t
o do simulations involving classical physics\, for example as with computa
tional fluid dynamics\, how might one go about simulating quantum mechanic
al systems on computers? I'll begin by describing the path integral pictur
e of quantum mechanics\, and then demonstrate that by looking at the resul
ting formulae in the right way\, we end up with various probabilistic meth
 ods of doing such computations.
