DESCRIPTION:The adjective 'feudal' is probably the only contribution of sp
 ecialist research on the medieval past to the modern\, general English voc
 abulary. An entire epoch in European history is still routinely described 
 as 'feudal'\, usually by historians of later periods. In this talk Dr Ryan
  will explain why historians found this concept so helpful\, some recent c
 hallenges to this old picture\, and what his own research on medieval law 
 and politics brings to these debates.\n
