DESCRIPTION:Elliptic Curves can be thought of topologically as a torus\, o
r algebraically as the solutions to a cubic equation in two variables. The
y have applications across mathematics\, but as a number theorist Prof. Bu
zzard will stress the more arithmetic applications they've had in recent t
imes\, for example to the congruent number problem and Fermat's Last Theor
em. He will also say something about the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture\
, one of the most important unsolved problems in number theory.
