DESCRIPTION:The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was initially perce
ived as an aggressive and expansive act by Western observers\; however\, i
n the 1990s newly declassified documents showed that Soviet motives were m
uch more erratic and defensive than previously assumed. Similarly\, the US
-narrative has been revised\; in the late 90s\, first evidence surfaced th
at the Carter administration had deliberately provoked the invasion by sup
porting the Mujahideen six months before the invasion. This talk will cons
ider these different narratives and attempt to shed light on some unresolv
ed questions and contradictions that still surround the Soviet invasion in
  Afghanistan.\n\n
