DESCRIPTION:We consider the problem of finding a conformal metric on a com
 pact surface\nin such a way that the Gaussian curvature becomes constant a
 nd so that at a\nfinite\nnumber of points a prescribed conical structure i
 s obtained. The problem has\na\nvariational structure\, and differently fr
 om the "regular" case the\nEuler-Lagrange\nfunctional might be unbounded f
 rom  below. We will look for critical points\nof saddle\ntype using a comb
 ination of improved geometric inequalities and topological\nmethods.\nThis
