DESCRIPTION:Long after MIMO communication has been proposed as a viable pa
th around the rate limitations of point-to-point communication\, achieving
its most general forms remains an elusive goal. In today's Internet\, the
scenario of interest is realizing wireless data transmission at high data
rates over the last hop\, serving simultaneously multiple users from diff
erent access point locations. Current multiuser signal multiplexing scheme
s require that different access points coordinate their transmissions to t
he symbol and phase level\, thus requiring the realization of a distribute
d MIMO system. In this talk we describe the techniques used in creating su
ch a system using over-the-air synchronization and present our experimenta
l results. We emphasize particularly achieving scalability in a large depl
oyment and discuss techniques for reducing synchronization and channel est
imation overhead\, while achieving high rates of spectral reuse.
