DESCRIPTION:The field of ultracold atoms has grown rapidly over the last t
wo decades since the achievement of Bose Einstein condensation in 1995. I
will give an brief introduction to ultracold atoms and how they can be us
ed to study many-body condensed-matter physics problems. I will use three
specific projects to illustrate this. (1) The shift of the Bose-Einstein
transition temperature due to interactions. (2) The study of a non-equilib
rium superheated Bose-Einstein condensate. (3) The first realisation of a
 homogeneous trap for ultracold atoms.
