DESCRIPTION:Platelets act as the guardians of our blood supply. They const
 antly maintain a fine balance between bleeding and clotting and are quick 
 to respond to injury\, in response to which they plug and seal the wound. 
 Our Western lifestyle however has heralded an increase in cardiovascular d
 isease\, in which platelets swing into action in at the wrong place and ti
 me\, resulting in heart attacks and sudden death. This talk provides an ov
 erview on platelets and their function\, briefly illustrating current rese
 arch carried out in the Department of Biochemistry in the field of heart d
 isease research.
