DESCRIPTION:The idea of “teacher-as-researcher” has been actively prop
osed by different scholars across the world. \nOne of the approaches to st
udying one's professional practice critically\, advocated by Western schol
ars\, \nis Action Research. Given a wide range of educational reforms in K
azakhstan\, teacher educators and \nteachers are privileged to adopt new i
deas brought to their classrooms through teacher development \ncourses. Th
is paper presents teachers' learning experiences of doing Action Research
on a 10-month \nteacher training course at the Centre for Educational Poli
cy\, Nazarbayev University. It goes on to \ndiscuss teachers' perceptions
of their roles as researchers. It examines (de)motivating factors and \nex
ternal circumstances influencing their values\, beliefs and attitudes towa
rds the role of teacher-asresearcher. It also draws on the authors' person
al experiences of taking part in the initial teacher \neducation programme
s and INSET courses. The paper is based on the interview and survey data a
 nd\, \nmore importantly\, takes teachers' voices seriously.
