DESCRIPTION:On 24 April\, 16:30-18:30\, Dr John Raven will be giving a tal
 k on 'Education\, values and society' at Downing College in Cambridge. Aim
 ed at anyone with a deep interest in education\, the talk will be interest
 ing to experts and non-experts alike\, tackling issues such as the differe
 nce between ‘learning’ and ‘learning content’ and what we value in
  education as a society.\n\nResearch has shown that the nurturing of high 
 level competencies in pupils such as initiative\, problem solving ability\
 , the ability to work with others\, and the ability to play an active part
  in society is viewed as highly desirable. Yet within the current educatio
 nal system this nurturing is often eschewed in favour of more conventional
  tests to the detriment of both pupils and society.\n\nOrganised by the Ca
 mbridge Assessment Network\, the event is free to attend and is open to al
