DESCRIPTION:A special CMS Colloquium is scheduled for Thursday 25th April.
\nIt is planned as two talks to be given at 2pm and 4pm\, MR2 by\nPierre
Cartier\, separated by tea (served at 3.15pm) and followed by a reception.
\nProfessor Cartier's title and abstract are as follows. \n\n\n\nGalois th
eory can be considered as a theory of hidden\nsymmetries \, symmetries whi
ch are not easily seen from the governing\nequations of the processes . We
view Connes presentation of the\nrenormalization group in physics as anot
her incarnation ot this\nGalois philosophy . We give in this way a partial
explanation\, of\ntwo important features :\n\n* the physical fundamental
constants are "running"\;\n\n* the explicit constants coming fromm the ph
ysical models are\nvery often connected with the Riemann zeta function.\n\
