DESCRIPTION:Coyne\, R. (2004). Wicked problems revisited. Design Studies 2
 6\, 5-17.\n\nAvailable online at: http://tinyurl.com/79nns\n\nOriginal abs
tract:\nI revisit Rittel and Webers essay on the wicked problem\, and rela
te it to\nmore recent theories about rationality and professionalism. Perh
aps the\nmost provocative challenge comes from Deleuze and Guattaris diffi
cult\ncommentary on the rhizome\, which has currency within much design\ns
tudio culture. I posit the controversial conclusion that wickedness is not
\naberrant. It is formulations of professionalism which pay homage to the\
nidea of formal rules\, goal setting\, and calculation as representing the
norm\nof rationality\, that present as deviations.\n\nRubric for the read
ing group: \nEveryone attending is expected to read the paper in advance.
Please bring a copy with you\, preferably annotated with interesting refle
ctions. The format of discussion will be a brief invited introduction/crit
ique by two members of the group\, followed by general discussion and info
 rmal mixing.
