DESCRIPTION:Following the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in
1945 both sides in the cold war rapidly expanded their nuclear arsenals a
nd it became certain that a major nuclear exchange would result in complet
e destruction of cities and the death of millions of civilians. Military m
easures and diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing nuclear conflict have b
een widely discussed but less well known are the plans to protect civilian
populations from the consequences of attack. This talk centres on the UK
government’s strategies for national survival\, their strengths and wea
knesses\, and the role of the many agencies and people who would have impl
emented them in time of war.
