DESCRIPTION:Understanding the shock compression of geological materials is
important for many applications\, and is particularly important to the mi
ning industry. During blast mining the response to shock loading determine
s the propagation speed and resulting fragmentation of the rock. The work
presented will include the shock response of fully dense and porous geolog
ical materials. The response of fully dense geological material can be pre
dicted from component crystal properties and molecular dynamics simulation
 s. The shock response of porous geological materials can be described usin
 g shock compaction models.
