DESCRIPTION:The use of automation and related 'intelligent' decision suppo
 rt systems is dramatically increasing in complex systems such as unmanned 
 vehicle systems\, process control\, and medical applications. In these dyn
 amic systems that require some level of human supervisory control\, the cu
 rrent trend is to increase automation both to improve overall efficiency a
 nd enhance safety. This presentation will discuss the strengths and limita
 tions of humans and automation in supervisory control settings and demonst
 rate that increasing automation may not necessarily have the intended effe
 ct.  Design interventions for mutual human-automation support that result 
 in superior system performance will also be discussed.
