 r's disease - Dr Clive Bate\, Pathology &amp\; Infectious Diseases\, The R

DESCRIPTION:Synapse degeneration is the key event leading to memory failur
e in Alzheimer's and prion diseases. Prions and amyloid-beta42 (thought to
be the major neurotoxin in Alzheimer's disease) trigger synapse damage in
cultured neurons. In this talk I will discuss the molecular mechanisms of
synapse damage in response amyloid-beta42 and prions including experiment
al data implicating the role of specific receptors\, lipid rafts and signa
lling cascades. I will then discuss possible intervention strategies based
on the manipulation of these molecular pathways.
