DESCRIPTION:The development of subject knowledge and pedagogical content k
nowledge has been the focus of much educational research and debate in rec
ent years. Of particular interest is the process by which pre-service scie
nce teachers develop pedagogical content knowledge from their subject know
ledge. In the study presented here\, a process of writing narrative explan
ations of scientific phenomena was developed as part of a pre-service teac
her education course at a UK university. This process revealed the importa
nce of teachers having coherent internal accounts to explain phenomenon wh
ich they can then share with students through meaningful discourse and joi
nt action. Developing these coherent internal accounts would appear to be
part of the process by which subject knowledge is transformed into pedagog
 ical content knowledge.
