SUMMARY: “Numerical Simulation – the Quest for Reality” - Richard St
 urt - Arup Fellow
DTSTART:20130510T140000Z
DTEND:20130510T150000Z
UID:TALK44646@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Lorna Everett
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the role of non-linear analysis in desi
gn within the built environment\, and draw parallels and contrasts with th
e motor industry. As engineers\, we deploy a wide range of analysis method
s to predict how our designs will behave\, ranging from back-of-the-envelo
pe hand-calculations through to multi-million-element finite element simul
ations. The talk will demonstrate how the extra realism and detail offered
by “heavy” non-linear analysis can sometimes open the door to a bette
r design solution. Examples will be shown from projects featuring building
 s\, tunnels\, foundations and cars. \n\n
