SUMMARY:Biological insights from cryo-EM studies of complex macromolecular
assemblies in transcription initiation and microtubule dynamics - Eva Nog
ales\, HHMI University of California Berkely

DESCRIPTION:We are interested in the mechanistic understanding of essentia
l eukaryotic molecular processes. Our research centers on cell division ro
les of the cytoskeleton\, and on the making and breaking of macromolecules
by molecular machines governing the flow of genetic information. We are v
isualizing these complex assemblies as whole units of molecular function u
sing cryo-electron microscopy to characterize their architecture\, functio
nal states and regulatory interactions. I will talk about our studies on t
he assembly of the human transcription pre-initiation complex\, and about
recent results concerning the effect of nucleotide and drug binding on the
  structure of microtubules.
