DESCRIPTION:Passive stack ventilation is one of a number of energy saving
features commonly incorporated into modern sustainable building designs. T
he design of large\, multi-compartment buildings poses a particular challe
nge for passive ventilation design due to the interaction between heat and
air flows through different building zones. Using a simple mathematical m
odel\, we determine a number of rules of thumb for preliminary ventilation
design in multi-storey buildings. In particular we highlight how a dimens
ionless analysis may be used to balance key design parameters and provide
an intuitive understanding of the behaviour of these ventilation flows.
