SUMMARY:Innovations in Systems Modelling: Processes\, Facilities and Infra
structure - Associate Professor Doug Creighton is Deputy Director of the C
entre for Intelligent Systems Research\, Deakin University

DESCRIPTION:The talk will present the two core research programs of Proces
s Modelling and Analytics and Robotics and Haptics at the Centre for Intel
ligent Systems Research (CISR) in Australia. CISR’s research focuses on
accelerated model development\, uncertainty estimation and scheduling usin
g discrete event simulation\, computational intelligence and meta-heuristi
cs.\n\nIndustry-based research into modelling of manufacturing processes\,
airport operations and logistics has garnered some valuable lessons into
the requirements of next generation platforms and intelligent decision sup
port systems. Time critical services\, such as airport baggage systems\, m
ining operations and passenger screening\, demand robust but efficient flo
ws in the presence of process uncertainty. Recent progress and research di
rections will be reported through a series of case studies at Australia’
s largest coal wash plant\, Boeing’s Dreamliner manufacturing operations
and Ford’s automotive production facilities. \n\nRobotics and automatio
n research projects\, including robotics and haptics projects with the Aus
tralian Department of Defence and the aerospace industry\, will also be di
 scussed.
