DESCRIPTION:This paper offers a close reading of the grammar of the gaze o
ffered in eighteenth-century prints that depict crowds of people looking a
t the window displays of London’s many print shops. It asks how far we c
an read them as accurate records of spectatorial practice\, and what we ca
n learn from the ways in which they advertise and project both their own p
ublic and their own position within the visual economy of the street in th
 e Georgian city.
