DESCRIPTION:We are proud to announce that the *2013 CUEN Annual Conference
 * on %{color:red}*Smart Cities and Smart Energy*% will be held on *Tuesday
the 18th of June*\, at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences\, University
of Cambridge.\n\nIn a world of continuous urbanization\, cities are an ess
ential part of a sustainable energy system and a sustainable future more g
enerally. Local governments around the globe strive for a thriving economy
\, high quality of life and a reduced environmental impact. But individual
infrastructure systems are not sufficient to keep up with recent developm
ents. Meeting the challenge of increasing populations and increasingly sca
rce resources requires new\, diverse and smart solutions. In four sessions
\, the conference will therefore address smart cities\, urban planning\, s
mart materials and energy storage and smart grids. \n\nIn bringing togethe
r professionals\, academics and students with a common interest in the des
ign of a smart energy future\, this conference aims to inform\, inspire an
d facilitate interaction between people whose diverse skills will play a f
undamental role in this meaningful area. \n\nThe event is also intended fo
r people with a general interest in energy\, opening up a discussion betwe
en different points of view on the topics of smart cities and smart energy
.\n\nConfirmed speakers so far:\n\n* 'Smart Cities in Action: Examples fro
m across Europe' - Professor Mark Deakin\, Edinburgh Napier University.\n*
'Extracting economic and environmental value from optimal integration of
energy vectors in Smart Cities' - Dr. Pierluigi Mancarella\, Lecturer in F
uture Energy Networks\, Manchester University.\n* 'Smart Cities and Smart
Energy / EU perspective.' - Mr Ari Sorsaniemi\, DG CONNECT\, Smart Cities
and Sustainability\, European Commission.\n* 'Designing the future: the ro
le of smart green cities' - Dr. Dimitri Zenghelis\, Visiting senior fellow
at LSE and Chief Economist at Cisco Climate Change Practice.\n* 'Smart Ma
terials in Renewable Energy Applications' - Professor Elias Siores\, Smart
Materials and Systems\, Bolton University.\n* 'Innovative Smart Grid Proj
ects: EDF Energy Smart Metering Trial for a Low Carbon London' - Dr. Panag
iotis Papadopoulos\, EDF Energy R&D UK Centre.\n* 'What is it that Makes S
marter Energy...Smart?' - Mr. Ian Abbott-Donnelly\, IBM European Smarter C
ities Innovation.\n* 'The economic value of electric vehicles' - Mr. Phil
