DESCRIPTION:Discrete symmetries play a crucial role in physics beyond the
Standard Model.\nFocusing on supersymmetric models which aim at explaining
the family structure of\nthe quarks and leptons\, I first discuss how dis
crete Abelian symmetries such as e.g.\nR-parity can emerge from an underly
ing U(1) Froggatt-Nielsen family symmetry. The\nobservation of large and v
ery peculiar mixing angles in the neutrino sector\nmotivates the idea a no
n-Abelian discrete family symmetry. I review their\nimplementation in supe
rsymmetric model building\, and discuss the implications of the\nrecent me
asurement of theta_13 of about 9 degrees by the Daya Bay and RENO\nexperim
 ents.
