DESCRIPTION:Automated feedback on writing may be a useful complement to te
 acher\ncomments in the process of learning a foreign language. This talk\n
 presents a self-assessment and tutoring system which combines an\nholistic
  score with detection and correction of frequent errors and\nfurthermore p
 rovides a qualitative assessment of each individual\nsentence\, thus makin
 g the language learner aware of potentially\nproblematic areas rather than
  providing a panacea. The system has been tested by learners in a range of
  educational institutions\, and their\nfeedback has guided its development
 .
