SUMMARY:Moving to low carbon energy provision – do we have a choice? - P
rof Geoffrey Maitland (Imperial College London)
DTSTART:20131128T190000Z
DTEND:20131128T200000Z
UID:TALK44954@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:John O'Toole
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be based on the premise that anthropogenic clima
te change is a reality and examine the options available to us in terms of
how the energy landscape needs to evolve over the next few decades and th
e associated issue of the carbon mitigation mechanisms open to us. It wil
l explore the various technology options that are available and some of th
e economic and political issues that need to be addressed if we are to ach
ieve the goal of avoiding catastrophic climate change. Some examples will
be given of how chemists and chemical engineers are helping to address th
is challenging global problem.\n\nProf Maitland is Professor of Energy Eng
ineering and Director of Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Cent
re at the Department of Chemical Engineering in Imperial College London. H
is research interests have included rock-fluid interactions\, chemical cha
racterisation of multicomponent fluids\, the development of new hydrocarbo
n recovery processes and the application of biological processes to oil re
covery. \n\nFree admission. Open to the public. Suitable for GCSE student
s.\nNo tickets\, so arrive early to get a good seat.\n\nOrganised by SCI C
 ambridge & Great Eastern Region\, RSC Mid-Anglia Section & CU ChemSoc\n\n
