DESCRIPTION:Understanding\, and particularly the link between understandin
 g and explanations\, has long been of interest to philosophers of science.
  More recently\, epistemologists have discovered understanding\;\nfocussin
 g particularly on the relationship between understanding and knowledge. Th
 e aim of this paper is to argue\, against the received wisdom in epistemol
 ogy\, that understanding p is identical to knowing p. More precisely\, I t
 ry to develop a view on which understanding is a way of knowing. I then dr
 aw out some implications for how explanation fits into the picture.
