SUMMARY:Metabarcoding: emerging technology allows rapid\, large-scale moni
toring of biodiversity for conservation and management. - Catharine Bruce\

DESCRIPTION:Measuring biodiversity is difficult\, expensive\, and time-con
suming because of the taxonomic impediment. Metabarcoding combines high-th
roughput sequencing with DNA taxonomy to overcome the taxonomic impediment
\, which opens the door to large-scale and repeated monitoring of biodiver
sity. \nMy talk will (1) introduce the concept of metabarcoding\, (2) pres
ent results from validation studies\, in which we show that the method pro
duces accurate and reliable biodiversity datasets\, and (3) introduce curr
ent work which is being conducted alongside managers of biodiversity in UK
farmland and forest ecosystems. \nI will also describe some of the other
strands of metabarcoding research\, including the use of environmental DNA
to survey plants (eDNA from soil)\, fish (eDNA from water)\, and mammals
 (iDNA from parasites and carrion-feeders).
