SUMMARY:Some Experiences in Designing SKA-related Sites and Instruments: E
ngineers\, Radio Astronomers and Construction Teams - Howard Reader (Univ
 ersity of Stellenbosch\, South Africa)

DESCRIPTION:The seminar reflects on the many activities that South African
and partner teams are engaged in that form part of setting up the Karoo s
ite to host the SKA telescopes. The engineering challenges\, directed by
the science goals\, regularly push the teams into unchartered waters. Fun
 ctional\, deadline-driven dialogue between international partners\, where
contractors have to watch their profit lines\, sets part of the boundaries
. The presentation will be illustrated with some contemporary development
s\, which will be related to broader SKA project progress\, especially wit
h respect to aperture arrays\, development metrology\, deployment and ligh
 tning/RFI protection.\n
