DESCRIPTION:I will discuss an ongoing project (joint with H. Van Maldeghem
 ) to give a\nuniform axiomatic description of the embeddings in projective
  space of the varieties corresponding with the geometries of exceptional L
 ie type over arbitrary fields.\n\nIn particular\, I will focus on the seco
 nd row of the split version of the\nFreudenthal-Tits Magic Square\, and pr
 ovide a uniform (incidence) geometric characterization of the Severi varie
 ties over arbitrary fields.\n\nThis can be regarded as a counterpart over 
 arbitrary fields of the\nclassification of smooth complex algebraic Severi
  varieties. The proofs just use projective geometry.\n
