SUMMARY:Research Challenges in Applying Control to Wheel-Rail Contact Prob
 lems - Professor T X Mei\, Chair in Control and Mechatronics\, University
 of Salford

DESCRIPTION:The first public railways opened in early 19th century\, and m
ore than 200 years later\, rail transport still plays a vital role in toda
y’s society\, providing one of the safest and the most energy efficient
forms of transport\, and it is becoming increasingly popular with the publ
ic and policy makers alike. \n\nIn this lecture\, Professor Mei will prese
nt the latest research in rail vehicle dynamics and control\, with a focus
on the critical issue of wheel-rail contact for the development and opera
tion of rail vehicles. In particular\, he will discuss the important role
of Control Engineering in solving the difficult problems in relation to th
 e complex wheel-rail contact dynamics\, ranging from traction/braking cont
rol systems to the active wheelset control and beyond.
